The world of Champagne has quietly opened a new chapter. The grape variety known as Pink Chardonnay — also called “Chardonnay Rosé” — has been formally authorised for use in the Champagne appellation, becoming the eighth permitted grape variety.

What Has Changed?

In July 2025, the regional governing body for Champagne, the Comité Champagne, updated its appellation rules to include Pink Chardonnay among the authorised grape varieties. Until now, the list included seven grapes: Chardonnay Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier and Arbane.

Pink Chardonnay is a natural mutation of Chardonnay Blanc, first identified in the early 1900s in both the Champagne and Burgundy regions. Until now, it remained very rare and mostly confined to vine collections or isolated plantings.

Why Does It Matter?

The inclusion of Pink Chardonnay reflects a conscious decision to preserve vine heritage and diversify vine stocks in Champagne. The move is being described as “a small revolution in the vineyard” by industry commentators.

From a commercial perspective, this is a compelling story. Rare grape, revived heritage variety, Champagne — that narrative has appeal. Early adopters may use this grape as a differentiator in cuvées.

What Should You Expect from the Wine?

According to available information, the oenological (winemaking) properties of Pink Chardonnay are very similar to standard Chardonnay: comparable ripening patterns, freshness, and acidity. Some sources suggest it may be slightly more vibrant in acidity.
Because the grape has just been authorised, we should not expect widespread planting or prominent use in bottlings immediately. The “minor” varieties together currently account for roughly 0.5 % of the Champagne vineyard area.

For the discerning wine drinker: When you see a Champagne that mentions Pink Chardonnay or highlights a special cuvée, it may offer a subtle twist on classic Chardonnay-style Champagne — worth tasting for nuance rather than expecting dramatic difference.

My Take

this is a smart move by the Champagne region. It balances respect for tradition (keeping the core grapes and style) with openness to evolution. South Australian Wine Reception in Bengaluru: A Fusion of Wine, Culture & Culinary Excellence

What do you get when you bring together iconic wines, beautifully paired food, and a room full of curious, passionate people? A genuinely memorable afternoon — and one I was fortunate to be a part of.

On June 23rd, the South Australian Wine Reception was hosted at Riwaz, The Ritz-Carlton, Bengaluru by the Government of South Australia, in honour of Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia. The event was held in association with the Bangalore Wine Club and I had the privilege of being part of it.

It wasn’t just a tasting — it was a moment of exchange, one that connected two distinct cultures through wine and food.

Celebrating Presence, People & Place

The reception was graced by some truly inspiring individuals. Her Excellency Frances Adamson spoke with clarity and warmth, sharing South Australia’s global perspective on trade, culture, and sustainability. She was joined by Ms. Hilary McGeachy, Consul-General of Australia in Bengaluru, and Mr. Tim White, representing the Department for Trade and Investment – South Australia, who anchored the event with insight and grace.

Together, they set the tone for a reception that was as diplomatic as it was delicious.

When Wine Meets the Indian Table

I had the opportunity to introduce guests to a range of wines from South Australia’s leading producers — each one chosen to show off the depth, diversity, and food-friendliness of the region.

What made the experience stand out was how seamlessly these wines paired with Indian flavours. The pairings were curated not just for balance, but for storytelling — combining local favourites with South Australian ingredients in inventive, memorable ways.

Some of the pairings that stood out:

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay with Coffin Bay oysters and a platter of cheeses paired with Beerenberg jams — a pairing that brought acidity, creaminess and sweetness into perfect harmony.
Killibinbin Shiver Chardonnay, full of tropical fruit and finesse, matched with a bold chicken tikka kulcha and blue cheese — an unexpected yet rewarding fusion.
The classic Penfolds Shiraz, known for its plum and pepper notes, stood up beautifully to a butter chicken layered with San Remo lasagna sheets — a playful, Indo-Australian hybrid. It also complemented a grilled romaine and broccoli dish with almonds and romesco.
Two Hands ‘Gnarly Dudes’ Shiraz brought that signature Barossa intensity to the plate — pairing effortlessly with tandoori South Australian lamb chops.
And for vegetarians, the d’Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz with saag burrata and mini missi rotis showed how rich red wine and plant-forward dishes can sing together.

Guests also had the chance to taste from a broader lineup of South Australian wines at the tasting tables. Standouts included:

Yalumba Y Series Chardonnay (unoaked and bright)
Henschke Julius Riesling (crisp and dry)
Henschke Keyneton Euphonium (a masterful red blend)
Metala White Label Shiraz (smooth and generous)
19 Crimes Shiraz (fruit-forward and easygoing)

What Makes South Australian Wine Special?

There’s a reason South Australia holds its place as a Great Wine Capital of the World. With 18 distinct wine regions, from Barossa and McLaren Vale to Clare Valley and Eden Valley, the diversity of terroir is matched only by its legacy.

The region is phylloxera-free, home to some of the oldest continuously producing vines in the world, and leads the way in sustainable viticulture — with nearly 70% of vineyards certified under Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

These wines are expressive, authentic, and rooted in a deep respect for land and craft.

A Toast to Cross-Cultural Conversations

This wasn’t just about wine. It was about connection. It was about seeing how flavours, conversations, and cultures intersect when people gather around a table. That’s what made the afternoon so meaningful — and why I’m truly grateful to have been part of it.

The Big Drinkers (Total Volume)

Let’s start with raw numbers—who’s buying the most bottles, cases, and barrels.

The U.S. continues to lead the world in wine consumption, though volumes dropped by nearly 6% compared to the previous year. France and Italy follow, though both have also seen declines. China’s consumption fell sharply—down 19%—likely due to economic challenges and changing habits.

Per Person? Portugal Wins

Portugal is clearly at the top when it comes to wine consumption per person—more than 61 litres a year on average. Italy and France remain in the top three, but their numbers have declined over the years.

What’s Changing?

Overall wine consumption is dropping: Global consumption fell 3.3% in 2024, the lowest in over 60 years.

With over €5 billion being poured into a campaign to boost wine exports and fight back against US tariffs, headlines are calling it a booze blitz. Sure, that sounds dramatic. But as someone who’s spent years working in and around wine, I think we need to look at the bigger picture.

This isn’t just about taxes and trade—it’s about perception, positioning, and long-term impact.

The wine world is not just bottles and barrels anymore. It’s storytelling, culture, and increasingly, experience-driven tourism. French wine has always had strong emotional equity globally, especially in the US. But when tariffs came in, that loyalty was tested. Prices went up. Importers hesitated. Retailers reworked their shelves. And naturally, US consumers began exploring other regions—Italy, Spain, even South America or homegrown labels.

As someone who has spent decades watching how the global wine market shifts, I see this less as a “wine war” and more as a smart reset. At the same time, I see this as a reminder for other wine-producing countries—including India—to rethink how we tell our story. People don’t just buy wine, they buy the meaning behind it.

So yes, France has fired a bold shot. But the wine world isn’t a battlefield—it’s a table. There’s room for many glasses, as long as each has something honest to say.

This move sets a benchmark. It’s no longer just about making great wine—it’s about how well you communicate your identity, how you innovate, and how connected you are to your audience.

Countries like Spain, Italy, even India, should be watching closely. Because the next big shift in wine won’t be in the vineyard—it’ll be in how we engage people beyond the bottle.

This isn’t a scene from a fable, but the real-life journey of Vina Maris, a wine that dares to dream deeper.

The Beginning: A Vineyard’s Whisper

The story starts in the sun-drenched vineyards of Jumilla, Spain. Here, the vines dig deep into sandy, limestone-rich soils, drawing up the minerals and memories of the land. Each grape-Monastrell, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah-ripens under the watchful eye of the winemakers at Bodegas Carchelo, absorbing the essence of their unique terroir.

But for Vina Maris, the adventure is only just beginning.
